Fayetteville, Georgia Oct 5, 2023 (Issuewire.com) - Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) is considered as a promising platform for photonics integrated circuits due to its tight mode confinement, high nonlinear efficiency and wide transparency window. Chinese scientists have recently reported an ultra-wideband waveguide-coupled photodiode on the TFLN platform. This photodiode achieved a 3-dB bandwidth of 110 GHz and a responsivity of 0.4 A/W at 1,550 nm wavelength. This study is important for the development of large-scale, multifunctional, and high-performance TFLN photonic integrated circuits.
Owing to its strong electro-optic coefficient and wide transparency window, lithium niobate (LN) has become an attractive photonic material. Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) technology has enabled tight mode confinement and high nonlinear efficiency. Various compact integrated photonics devices have been realized on the TFLN platform, such as compact high-performance modulators, polarization management devices, and broadband frequency comb sources. However, the inherent difficulty of lithium niobate in realizing light sources and photodetector poses a challenge for the TFLN integrated photonics platform. As an essential optoelectronic component, an on-chip integrated high-performance photodetector is vital for TFLN photonic integrated chips.
In a new paper published in Light: Advanced Manufacturing, a research team, led by Professor Xiaojun Xie and Lianshan Yan from Key Laboratory of Photonic-Electric Integration and Communication-Sensing Convergence, School of Information Science and Technology, Southwest Jiaotong University, China, has reported a high-speed and high-responsivity modified uni-traveling carrier photodiodes heterogeneously integrated on the TFLN platform. The device exhibits a 3-dB bandwidth of 110 GHz and a responsivity of 0.4 A/W at a wavelength of 1,550-nm wavelength.
The fabrication process was initialized by the dry etching of LN waveguides and passive devices. A hybrid etching approach was followed to form device mesa. After metal plating and lift-off, the chips were diced and polished. Epitaxial layer structure, LN waveguide geometry, and CPW pad geometry were optimized to achieve both large bandwidth and high responsivity. To further assess the performance of the devices, the team applied these devices to a data transmission system and successfully detected PAM4 signals at 32 Gbaud with high quality. It was demonstrated that the heterogeneously integrated photodiodes on the TFLN platform have the potential to be applied in the next-generation high-speed transmission systems.
This work paves the way to achieving massive-scale, multi-function, and high-performance TFLN photonic integrated circuits. Moreover, it holds promise for ultra-high-speed optical communications, high-performance integrated microwave photonics, and multi-function integrated quantum photonics

The police in the city of Incheon said they had arrested one man and were investigating his motive.
Rising demand for copper has fueled interest in Bougainville’s Panguna mine, which has been shut for four decades. Yet some fear a rush to reopen risks return to violence.
Huawei Technologies has shipped more than 100 million devices powered by its Kirin processors since 2023, when it returned to the smartphone market with a new generation of premium handsets. The company says testing of its next-generation Kirin 2027 chip is also progressing in line with expectations. The company disclosed the figure on Tuesday as it unveiled new details about its flagship Kirin 9050 series, the first mass-produced chip using its proprietary LogicFolding architecture, developed...
The US government’s plan to live-stream the execution of a former Army member convicted in a deadly 2009 mass shooting is raising questions about how effectively Southeast Asian governments can restrict graphic online content. Analysts say while authorities may have powers to restrict access to the live stream, containing clips and altered copies of the killing posted to social media could prove far more difficult. The issue gained fresh urgency on Tuesday, after Australia’s Environment Minister...
A 59-year-old man stabbed at least eight people on Tuesday at a shopping centre in the South Korean city of Incheon, police and fire officials said. One victim was in life-threatening condition and received surgery at a nearby hospital. The suspect attacked shoppers as he moved through the shopping centre before business owners and bystanders subdued him, according to local police and witnesses. The man has a history of violent offences and mental illness and was required to wear an electronic...
US President Donald Trump’s decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel exports and allow fresh supplies to reach global markets could give India greater leverage in its own dispute with Washington over discounted crude purchases, analysts said. Beyond the energy dispute, they said the move could also open up diplomatic opportunities for New Delhi, from pressing for more consistent treatment by Washington to building on its efforts to help negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. Under the...
Leaders of India’s “cockroach” protest movement were detained again on Tuesday, their second detention in days, as a stand-off with authorities deepened over a contentious overhaul of voter rolls. Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, two prominent faces of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party, were taken into custody with other members after jumping barricades to enter Jantar Mantar, historically one of New Delhi’s main protest venues. Delhi police on Monday removed Jantar Mantar’s designation as a...
A sharp sell-off in Asian memory chip stocks this week signals growing investor doubts over whether the sector’s AI-driven profit boom can last, even as soaring prices drive strong quarterly earnings across the sector. Shares in market leaders Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix plunged in Seoul on Tuesday, extending a days-long slide that has also swept up Chinese rival ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). Samsung and SK Hynix closed down 7.4 per cent and 10.1 per cent, respectively. The companies...
An Indonesian official’s claim that the country exports “oxygen” and not just smoke to its neighbours has renewed criticism of Jakarta’s handling of its annual forest fires, with analysts warning that defensive nationalism risks undermining regional cooperation to tackle the recurring haze crisis. The remarks by Syahganda Nainggolan, the newly appointed head of the Government Communication Agency, reignited criticism over Indonesia’s handling of its ongoing forest and peatland fires, which have...
Chinese AI chipmaker Iluvatar CoreX debuted its first supernode system, a computing system that squeezes 144 graphics processing units (GPUs) into a single cabinet, breaking an industrial record. The new product, dubbed the Tiangai 300 IXL144, was unveiled on Monday at the 2026 China International Industry Fair (CIIF) in Shanghai. Designed for large-scale AI model training and inference, the system packs 144 GPUs and 18 central processing units (CPUs) into a single cabinet and boasts around 10.1...
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said on Tuesday that officials were reviewing the off-base code of conduct for US troops in Japan following the alleged killing of an Okinawan woman by a US marine. Crimes including rapes, assaults, hit-and-runs and drunk driving by US military personnel have long triggered protests on the southern Japanese island, which has for years urged other regions in the country to share the burden of hosting US troops. “We plan to hold discussions including...
North Korea now has a museum for its bombs. The National Defence Revolution Museum, which opened on Sunday, is the country’s first dedicated exclusively to military hardware, from rifles to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Observers say it is also intended to send a message to Washington and Seoul, serve as a permanent showroom for the North’s arms exports and visibly enshrine its nuclear programme as an irreversible part of state policy. Third-generation ruler Kim Jong-un cut the...
