The Card Paradox Examines How Trading Cards Became a Global Culture Across Sports, Gaming and Fandom

New book by Jorge Rabbit explores how collecting moved beyond local hobby shops into a worldwide ecosystem spanning Pokémon, sports, entertainment, technology and commerce

South East Asia, September 28, 2026 -- Trading cards may be small enough to fit in a pocket, but the culture surrounding them increasingly crosses borders, generations and entertainment industries.

That global transformation is the subject of The Card Paradox, a new book by Jorge Rabbit examining how trading cards evolved from a traditional collecting hobby into an international ecosystem shaped by sports fandom, gaming, grading, technology, marketplaces and online communities.

Launched on September 18, 2026, the book looks beyond individual card prices to examine why collecting continues to attract people across different cultures and why the same physical object can carry very different meanings depending on who is holding it.

Its central idea is simple:

Same cards. Different game.

A sports card may represent a childhood hero to one collector. A Pokémon card may sit at the intersection of gaming, anime, nostalgia and global fandom. Another card may be valued for its rarity, condition, historical significance or place within a wider collection.

The Card Paradox explores how all of those motivations now coexist inside one increasingly connected global market.

Collecting No Longer Stops at the Local Hobby Shop

For earlier generations, card collecting could be intensely local.

Discovery happened through friends, local shops, shows, playground trades and personal networks. Knowledge often travelled slowly, while obscure cards could remain obscure for years.

Technology has changed that experience.

Modern collectors can search for cards, compare examples, study grading populations, follow auctions and interact with communities far beyond their own cities or countries.

The result is a hobby in which geographic distance matters less than it once did.

The Card Paradox examines that transition while looking at collecting cultures in North America, Europe and Asia, as well as the global systems connecting them.

The book considers how marketplaces, social media, grading companies, live commerce, data platforms and international distribution changed the way collectors discover, evaluate and exchange objects.

But it also asks what may be lost when a once-local hobby becomes searchable, measurable and globally accessible.

Sports, Pokémon and Entertainment Now Share the Same Collecting Economy

The book also examines how the boundaries between different kinds of collecting have become less distinct.

Traditional sports cards now sit alongside Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, One Piece and other trading-card game ecosystems.

At the same time, sports leagues, anime properties, entertainment franchises and other forms of intellectual property can support their own communities of collectors.

That makes trading cards part of a much wider conversation about fandom.

A collector may enter through football, basketball, Pokémon, anime or another franchise, but many of the forces surrounding those cards are increasingly similar: scarcity, licensing, marketplaces, condition, community, discovery and the desire to complete a collection.

The book refers to this as part of the wider infrastructure that has grown around an object that remains fundamentally simple.

When Fandom Becomes Infrastructure

One of the questions explored in The Card Paradox is what happens when enthusiasm for a player, team, character or franchise develops into an entire commercial ecosystem.

Modern collecting can involve manufacturers, licensing agreements, grading companies, auction houses, professional sellers, online platforms, content creators and live-streamed card breaks.

A card can therefore be many things at once.

It can be a memory, a game piece, a cultural object, a collectible, a social connection or an item carrying measurable market value.

The book argues that understanding modern collecting requires looking at all of those meanings together rather than reducing the hobby to prices or investment returns.

The Human Reasons for Collecting Have Not Disappeared

Despite the increasingly sophisticated infrastructure surrounding trading cards, The Card Paradox returns repeatedly to a more basic question: why do people want to collect things in the first place?

The book explores nostalgia, identity, status, competition, completion and belonging as forces that continue to shape collecting even as the industry around them changes.

For some collectors, the appeal is connected to childhood.

For others, it begins with a favourite athlete, game, anime series or fictional character.

The platforms and markets may change, but the emotional connection to the object can remain.

This tension between an increasingly global system and deeply personal reasons for collecting forms one of the book's central themes.

Not a Guide to Buying the Next Valuable Card

Although The Card Paradox discusses scarcity, speculation, prices and alternative-asset thinking, it is not an investment guide.

The book does not recommend particular cards, predict prices or tell readers which collectibles to buy.

Instead, Rabbit approaches trading cards as a cultural market and examines the systems, behaviours and human motivations behind them.

Its intended audience extends beyond traditional sports-card collectors to TCG players, dealers, card-shop owners, gaming audiences, sports-business readers, e-commerce professionals and people interested in nostalgia, fandom and consumer culture.

"Same cards. Different game. Nothing broke. Everything changed."

Thai man’s jet ski stunt fuels anger in ‘unequal’ Bangkok as poor hit hardest by floods

A Thai man who zipped a jet ski across flooded Bangkok streets received a suspended jail sentence on Monday for causing a public nuisance after he used the capital – where tens of thousands of households remain submerged – as a backdrop for social media content. The stunt, widely shared on social media on Sunday evening, became a conduit for public anger over both the handling of the flood response and how climate calamities are experienced unevenly in the capital of one of Asia’s least equal...

The estimate comes from the firm’s tracking of more than 1,000 facilities in China operated by over 60 companies. ByteDance rents nearly all of its data centre footprint, SemiAnalysis said. Its AI products include Doubao, an assistant that...

South Korea’s POW row with Ukraine puts ties and aid at risk

An escalating diplomatic row over Ukraine’s disclosure of a North Korean prisoner-of-war transfer is threatening to jeopardise South Korea’s future ties with and support for Kyiv, analysts say, even as it hands fresh ammunition to the political opposition in Seoul. South Korea’s presidential official issued a statement late on Sunday demanding an official explanation and apology for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s disclosure about the POWs at last week’s UN General Assembly. Seoul said...

Japan denies ‘militarisation’ after Russia opposes permanent UN council seat

Tokyo on Monday rebuked Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov after he voiced opposition over the weekend to Japan’s drive for permanent membership of the UN Security Council, claiming the country was on a “path of militarisation”. Lavrov’s comments came as the security council, tasked with safeguarding peace, is facing calls for reform amid accusations it failed to prevent recent conflicts such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, due largely to the veto power of its five permanent members:...

Mainland Chinese stocks hit 13-month low on tech sell-off as Hong Kong market holds up

Mainland Chinese stocks fell to their lowest level in 13 months on Monday as the sell-off in technology shares intensified amid concerns that elevated global capital costs and surging oil prices would curb risk appetite. Markets opened the week on a sombre note, with the CSI 300 Index dropping 2.2 per cent to close at a level not seen since August 21 last year. The chip-heavy Star Market 50 index tumbled 4.1 per cent, capping its steepest single-day decline in five weeks and closing in on the...
