Little Beakers Releases Parent Guide to Hands-On Science for Kids

Oct 1, 2026

Little Beakers, a hands-on science lab with five locations in Texas and Utah, has published a guide for parents that draws on active-learning research and a chemist's bench experience to show how children build science skills by doing experiments.

Houston, United States, October 1, 2026 /NewsNetwork/ -- Little Beakers, a hands-on science lab for children ages 2 to 16, has released a free guide for families who want their kids doing science instead of watching it. "Hands-On Science for Kids: The Complete Little Beakers Guide" went live Sept. 24, 2026, at https://littlebeakers.com/hands-on-science-for-kids/ and covers activities at home and in a lab.

Dr. Cinttya Morgan, the company's founder and lead scientist, wrote the guide. She is a military and aerospace chemist whose work centers on materials chemistry and polymer engineering. Morgan started Little Beakers on a simple conviction: any child, from any background, should be able to walk into a real lab, use real equipment, and get inspired.

Research behind the approach

Education research has leaned toward active, hands-on instruction for years, and the guide draws on that work. Its main source is a meta-analysis of 225 studies published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Active learning raised exam performance by about 6%. Students in traditional lecture classes were roughly 1.5 times more likely to fail.

A second study, from 2024, tested hands-on activities with preschoolers in a controlled setting. Science motivation rose in children as young as 5, for girls and boys alike. The guide pairs that finding with a 2009 National Academies report, "Learning Science in Informal Environments," which found that children learn real science in places like science centers and during family activities, not only in school.

For Morgan, the research matches what she has watched thousands of children do at Little Beakers lab benches. "The moment a child runs their own reaction, their question changes," she writes. A child who starts out asking "What is that?" soon asks "What happens if…?" That second question, she writes, is science.

What the guide covers

The guide's core is a routine Morgan calls a four-beat loop. Children predict what will happen, run the test, look closely at the result, and write it down. According to the guide, prediction is the step most families skip, and it separates an experiment from a show.

The guide includes kitchen-table activities, such as baking soda and vinegar reactions run with one amount changed each time. A four-week home plan ends with a lab visit. One section follows a single polymer experiment as it is adjusted for children at ages 4, 9 and 14.

Home science has limits, and the guide names them. Lab equipment is costly for one family. Dissection specimens are hard to manage at a kitchen table. And children learn from comparing results with other kids at the bench.

For a first lab visit, the guide suggests one reserved Open Lab session, where families work through more than 30 self-guided experiments together. Details are at https://littlebeakers.com/open-lab-memberships/. The company says about 55,000 children have come through Open Lab so far.

Homeschooled children alone make up more than 3% of U.S. students, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The guide notes that those families face the same question as public and private school families: where can a child actually do science, not just read about it?

About Little Beakers: Little Beakers is a hands-on science lab for kids ages 2 to 16 with five permanent locations: Cypress, The Woodlands and Katy/Memorial in Texas, and Sandy and Orem in Utah. Whatever Trump claims, weaponisation of space makes losers of us all

When the US Space Force announced on September 14 that “the US has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile adversary action”, I thought of Isaac Newton’s well-known declaration that he could not calculate the madness of people. This is the first time a country has admitted to deploying weapons in space. Today, the orbits are congested and contested with many nations conducting military activities, such as surveillance and reconnaissance, early missile...

China leads drone patent volume but US matches quality as start-ups drive innovation: study

Chinese and US firms are “neck-and-neck” in the quality battle for the next generation of drone patents, despite China having a lead in volume, a study published on Thursday shows. Chinese companies accounted for 44 per cent of the world’s drone patent filings in 2024, against 17 per cent for American firms, according to a report published by LexisNexis. Measured by value, however, US drone patents were on a par with China’s, leaving the two countries roughly even in total global patent asset...

South Korea hits back at Trump’s investment claims in ‘tit-for-tat move’

US President Donald Trump’s unilateral announcement of a “colossal” South Korean investment package has prompted Seoul to clarify that the deal is far from finalised, laying bare stark differences between the allies over the terms of their trade agreement, observers have said. On Wednesday, Trump announced that South Korea would invest in the construction of a natural gas-fired power plant in Texas, eight large-scale nuclear power plants across the United States and a liquefied natural gas (LNG)...

Why Japan is looking to Ukraine’s front lines to overhaul its defences

Japan is increasingly tapping into Ukraine’s war experience against Russia as a valuable source of intelligence on military technologies that could strengthen its defensive and offensive capabilities. A visit to Kyiv this week by senior ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker and former Japanese defence minister Itsunori Onodera demonstrates this interest, analysts say, against the backdrop of Tokyo’s mounting regional security concerns. Onodera arrived in the Ukrainian capital on Wednesday to...

Nearly a third of Singaporeans open to nuclear energy’s potential, highest in Asean: study

Just under a third of Singaporeans, or 31.4 per cent, believe that nuclear energy promises a clean power source with the greatest potential in the city state, representing the highest acceptance rate in Southeast Asia, a new study has found. The approval rate represented an 11.1 per cent increase from 2024, the Southeast Asia Climate Outlook 2026 Survey found, even as solar energy continued to be the most popular choice. Singapore is studying advanced nuclear technologies, including small...

India’s erratic monsoon plays havoc with harvests, raising fears of spending slowdown

For Ajay Kumar Chutani, whose family has run a sari shop in the north Indian market town of Karnal since the 1970s, the months after the monsoon are always his busiest. During these cool weeks, he sells enough lengths of silk and embroidered cotton to tide him over the leaner seasons, as farming families prepare for weddings and the frenetic festival season. This year, after erratic rains through the wet season and the country’s weakest rainfall since 2015, Chutani is keeping a close eye on the...
