Dr Arnis Lidums discusses the importance of long term value, follow up care and informed treatment decisions as Australians look overseas for dental treatment.
Australia, October 22, 2026 -- Australian dental practices are seeing the consequences of dental treatment undertaken overseas. CommBank's Dental Insights 2024 report found that 79% of practices surveyed had treated patients presenting with complications from overseas dental work in the previous year.

The most commonly reported issues were crowns and bridges (82%), followed by dental implants (75%) and cosmetic dentistry (40%).
The Australian Government’s Smartraveller lists dentistry among the most common procedures Australians travel overseas for, noting that many seek treatment abroad to save money.
Price is an important part of the decision, but it is not the only thing patients need to think about. Dental treatment can continue long after the initial procedure, with follow-up care and ongoing maintenance often forming part of the process.
The Australian Dental Association says limited treatment time and language differences may affect communication and informed consent. Follow-up care may be complicated by incomplete treatment records or products, materials and techniques that are incompatible with Australian systems or standards.
Insurance is another consideration. Smartraveller found that only one-third of survey respondents knew they might need additional cover for an overseas medical procedure. Basic travel insurance usually excludes medical tourism, including elective procedures and related complications.
These concerns are not new. A 2010 Australian Dental Journal case report documented five cases involving complications following dental treatment overseas, highlighting issues around regulation and accountability.
For patients, the real comparison goes beyond the price in Australia versus overseas. It is about the whole treatment journey, from planning and treatment to follow-up and long-term care.
In Australia, dentists must be registered and meet professional standards, while dental materials and devices are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). Patients also have established avenues for follow-up care and recourse if problems arise.
“Cost is an important consideration for patients, but so is the long-term value of their treatment,” said Dr Arnis Lidums, Specialist Prosthodontist and founder of Lidums Dental.
“We take the time to understand each patient’s concerns, expectations and goals before recommending a personalised treatment approach designed to support predictable, long-term results.”
“We also offer payment plan options to help make treatment costs more manageable and give patients greater flexibility in how they pay for their treatment.”
Before booking dental treatment overseas, patients are encouraged to look beyond the initial quote and understand what is included across the full course of treatment. Speaking with an Australian dentist can help them compare their options and make an informed decision.

A knife-wielding intruder is confronted. A car is lifted to free a trapped victim. A pedestrian is pulled from the path of an oncoming vehicle. The scenes described are not from a Hollywood blockbuster, but a promotional clip for a new “guardian” robot created by the Chinese technology firm Unitree Robotics. The footage for the H2-X model, released on Wednesday, underscores a wider shift in strategy by the Hangzhou-based firm, as it focuses on finding practical, real-world uses for its athletic...
Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has marked one year in office still riding relatively high in public opinion polls – a heady position that few political analysts anticipated despite geopolitical tensions and persistent inflation. A poll by the conservative-leaning Yomiuri newspaper published on Monday indicated that Takaichi’s cabinet retains the support of 57 per cent of the Japanese public, down two percentage points from the previous survey on September 18 and significantly lower than...
Government agencies and companies around the world shut down websites on Wednesday after two critical flaws came to light involving PHP, a programming language that is the basis for a large share of the internet. PHP sits underneath popular web design platforms, so the weaknesses potentially affect a vast range of websites, from online stores and news outlets to government services. Wiz, one of the security firms that found the issues, estimated that PHP runs about 70 per cent of the world’s...
Last month, the US published the fine print of a US$686 million upgrade deal for Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jets. The deal is for data link systems, new encryption gear and a refit that keeps the jets flying until 2040. The notice says Pakistan can protect the technology to “substantially the same degree” as the US government. The Pakistan Air Force is also the only declared interested buyer of China’s J-35 stealth fighter, a generational leap in technology. The Chinese jet first flew at the Zhuhai...

Meta Platforms was ordered to pay a groundbreaking US$25 billion civil penalty to the state of New Mexico in a consumer deception case spurred by the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The fine issued by state court Judge Francis Mathew is among the largest verdicts issued in US legal history. The award comes after a jury in Santa Fe determined that Meta had violated the state’s consumer protection over 43 million times based on widely viewed deceptive statements made by the company and its top...
