Young athletes are often looked to as examples of mental strength, confidence, and toughness. Adults test them and push them, they're in charge, and it's easy to forget that these athletes are children. They are vulnerable, stressed, and afraid, and yet they can rarely talk about it. That's why Lisa Mitzel started Zen Tiger Mind.
Lisa noticed that the people in charge of teaching and training young athletes - their parents, coaches, and teachers - often don't have the specific knowledge or tools to help young children with mental and emotional struggles. Kids need help to build confidence and learn self-compassion and emotional intelligence in order to manage challenges and difficult feelings. "With Zen Tiger Mind," Lisa explains, "I wanted to provide what adults need to guide our youth, and bridge the gap with mental exercises and mental health practices for young people."
What adults need is a simple system to guide kids through daily mental practices, and Zen Tiger Mind's Mental Power Station is designed to be exactly that. Consisting of four small mats with mental exercises and fun animal characters, Lisa created a calming and thinking station that boosts the ability to focus and feel confident during physical training. Zen Tiger Mind also offers a method to track young athletes' progress, with Mental Power Journals. Kids learn about their emotions, increase self-motivation, self-efficacy, and improve their self-esteem.
In the next few years, Lisa would like to see a big change in how adults approach mental health in youth sports, like gymnastics, acrobatic sports, and in any high-pressure environment for kids. Normalizing mental health practices can only have positive results. Zen Tiger Mind's Mental Power Station is pioneering a new way to help kids go inward to manage their struggles, take things one step at a time, and that they have all the power inside them.
While Zen Tiger Mind's equipment and products fall into a new category of training, it is also incredibly approachable and can be used in recreation centers and schools, too, emphasizing leadership skills, mental health, and wellness. As kids feel happier and less stress, and adults see positive results, it will make everyone want to participate.
The Mental Power Station is designed to work for anyone coaching sports, from sports camps, dance and cheer programs, to private gyms and any level of sports team. Zen Tiger Mind's core principles are to help kids use their own voice and feel calm and confident. To see Zen Tiger Mind in action, they will be displaying equipment, products, and demonstrations at their booth at the USA Gymnastics National Congress & Tradeshow, Aug. 17-21 at the Tampa Convention Center, Tampa, FL, and at the USA Gymnastics Region 1 Congress, Aug. 26-28, at the Double Tree by Hilton, San Jose, CA.

A second attempt to guide a shark stranded in a canal in the South Korean port city of Busan back to the open sea ended without success on Friday, with the animal staying in the waterway into its third week. Rescuers, who had been using a net to try to coax it out, had to end the operation after a two-hour chase due to the risk of their huge net getting caught on rocks. They now hope that the shark will eventually swim out to the open sea on its own, after leaving the net in place to limit how...
