Dress up fun and its imaginative advantages
Donning an awesome fairy outfit or astronaut suit, sparks an absolutely creative and wondrous experience for children. A major plus, is that there are excellent advantages that benefit children's development.
Kylie-Jane Shannon, owner of Jungle Kids Indoor Play Centre, discusses the benefits of dress up fun, and how it can spark imaginative creativity and provide for healthy development in children, at both play centres, and at home.
"Jungle Kids Indoor Play Centre offers themed parties for young children that promote dress up play for children, stimulates their imagination and inspires their creative abilities," says Kylie. "The Safari and Fairy parties are very popular and others are on offer too," he adds.
The array of costumes enables children to transition into their favourite character, as well as teaching them to dress up without any fuss, supporting parents in their quest for stress-free dress up experiences with their little ones. The possibilities of dress up are endless. Arts and craft items can be supplied to enable children to build props or add other effects to enhance their dress up experience.
"Dress up play is more than just wearing a particular costume, it helps the child imitate the mannerisms of the character they're playing. This also allows children to infuse their own creative take on the character, and encourages individually unique thinking," says Kylie. Children can create their own special themes, express a range of emotions, and effectively communicate through language, all in a safe environment.
The fun shouldn't just stop at play centres; take children out into the community dressed in their costumes and watch how they use their imagination. Imaginative play can extend to designing games while they are in 'character'. Take your fairy princesses to the park and watch them create a fairy garden.
Play super-hero games such as X-Ray vision or Captain America (Visit Firstcry Parenting's 10 fascinating superhero games for kids here). Your child might choose to be a pirate stomping around and scaring people, or a doctor giving their teddy a check-up. The ideas are endless. Get involved with your children as they play, and don't forget to capture these fun and exciting moments on camera.
Have a dress up box at home and watch your child develop their imagination, build their confidence, express their emotions and above all, have fun. Items in the dress up box can include hats, eye-patches, sunglasses, swords, wands, cloaks, gloves, etc as well as ready-made costumes or pieces of material that children can use to transform themselves into a favourite character.
"Dress up fun can be an exciting and collaborative experience between parents and children. It supports healthy and creative development and is as important as academic development at school. So, allow their imagination to flow through their character and costume choice, and watch their creative magic unfold," says Kylie.

Chinese semiconductor plants amassed hundreds of immersion lithography machines worth billions of dollars in recent years, according to former US officials, who urged Washington and its allies to shut down further exports. Chinese-owned fabs had acquired an estimated 343 immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography systems by early 2026, said a report published in late September by the Centre for Technology & Statecraft (CTS), a Washington research group established in August. India’s opposition parties and the youth-led “cockroach” movement took to the streets on Friday, demanding action over alleged irregularities in voter rolls and calling for the resignation of the country’s chief election commissioner, as the combined pressure from the two groups poses a new challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. The protests have brought the opposition closer to the youth movement that it has sought to engage with, according to analysts. While their convergence...

AirAsia co-founder Tony Fernandes has caused a stir online after taking aim at Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) in-flight meals, claiming the food served by the carrier lagged behind his own airline’s offerings. “Just flew with Singapore Airlines, couldn’t get AirAsia, service was great, internet amazing, food was poor, Santan is far far better and crew admitted. Great flight but we are not far off,” Fernandes wrote in a social media post on Thursday, referring to AirAsia’s in-flight dining brand. The...

Malaysia’s long-standing strategy of non-alignment amid US-China rivalry in the South China Sea could soon be tested, with the eastern state of Sabah sitting near a potential flashpoint involving Philippine territory. Observers pointed to comments by Malaysian Defence Minister Khaled Nordin, who last week voiced concern that a conflict or “unexpected incident” in the maritime region could spill over into Malaysia. Khaled, who singled out Sabah, added that Malaysia was looking to strengthen its...
Indonesia’s new police chief faces a difficult task to balance growing public demands for accountability and independence as the force seeks to repair its image following a series of scandals in recent years. Even as Suyudi Ario Seto, 53, replaced Listyo Sigit Prabowo on Thursday, the government is weighing recommendations to reform the powerful institution, including changes to its work culture and limits on police officers holding public positions outside the force. China has set a five-year goal for the expansion of intelligent computing capacity to drive artificial intelligence (AI) that calls for a more than fourfold increase on what was in place at the end of June this year. To reach the 2030 target while being blocked by the United States from importing the most advanced Western-made AI chips will require innovation, adaptation and the application and coordination of vast resources. Judging by the 177 per cent increase in capacity achieved in the year...

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s reshuffling of his cabinet signals an urgent need to address criticism and dipping ratings by banking on experienced technocrats and trusted figures in key positions. But while the appointment of a new foreign minister has raised hopes of some restraint on Prabowo’s more impulsive foreign policy decisions, analysts say the president’s self-imposed role as “chief diplomat” is unlikely to change. In his second senior cabinet change in under three weeks,...
