Exploring the Birth of Faith: Jaime Reyes Presents "In the Beginning: The Early Days of Religious Beliefs"

Nov 5, 2026

A thought-provoking historical fiction novel takes readers 40,000 years into the past to explore how early beliefs, spiritual authority, and the foundations of religious practices may have emerged.

Portland, Oregon Nov 4, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - What if the origins of religion began not in temples or sacred texts, but within a prehistoric tribe seeking answers to the mysteries of the natural world? Author Jaime Reyes explores this intriguing possibility in his historical fiction novel, In the Beginning: The Early Days of Religious Beliefs, taking readers on an imaginative journey 40,000 years into the past to examine the beginnings of religious belief, the emergence of spiritual leadership, and the influence of power on human society.

Set in the world of a Neanderthal family, In the Beginning introduces an elderly patriarch who, amid his tribe's struggles and uncertainties, develops a compelling explanation for natural events that his people cannot understand. Presenting himself as the intermediary between the tribe and the spirits believed to govern these mysterious occurrences, he establishes a position of spiritual authority and becomes the first priest within his community.

As his influence grows, the patriarch passes his knowledge and authority down to his family, establishing a tradition of hereditary priesthood. Their responsibilities extend beyond spiritual leadership, as they also acquire practical survival skills, including hunting and warfare. Through this compelling premise, Reyes explores how belief, leadership, and the pursuit of influence could become intertwined in the development of early human communities.

With an engaging narrative that blends historical imagination with thought-provoking questions, Reyes examines the relationship between faith and survival and the ways individuals may use belief systems to establish authority and shape the direction of society. The novel invites readers to consider how religious traditions might have originated, why they endured, and how belief has influenced human civilization across generations.

A Story Inspired by Decades of Curiosity

The inspiration behind In the Beginning began with a school project that encouraged Reyes to compare the mythologies of ancient civilizations, including Greek, Roman, and Norse traditions, with established religions such as Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism.

His participation in a statewide school newspaper contest sparked a lasting curiosity about the evolution of religious beliefs. He began questioning why some ancient belief systems gradually disappeared while others continued to influence generations. He was also intrigued by the possibility that individuals in early societies may have recognized the influence of organized belief and used it to establish power and authority.

These questions remained with him for decades, gradually developing into the concept behind the novel. However, a serious medical event ultimately became the turning point that inspired him to bring the story to life. Confronted with the uncertainty of mortality, Reyes realized that he could no longer postpone a project that had occupied his thoughts for so many years.

Will New Zealand’s election reshape its ‘softly-softly’ approach to Trump?

Cost of living issues are expected to dominate this weekend’s election in New Zealand, but the outcome could also determine whether Wellington maintains its cautious approach to US President Donald Trump or pursues a more independent foreign policy, analysts have said. With the major parties locked in a close contest ahead of Saturday’s vote, the next government’s approach to Washington, as well as its defence priorities, could hinge on the smaller parties needed to form a coalition. South Korea wants a cyber tsar, but can it beat complacency?

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s push for a centralised cybersecurity agency after his passport details were leaked could face widespread inertia despite what he considers a national security priority. Tech experts warn that creating a new organisation alone will do little to address the deeper problem of complacency, with businesses and government agencies viewing tighter cybersecurity as an unnecessary expense until a serious breach occurs. Lee’s proposal comes amid growing scrutiny of...
