It may be difficult for a family to choose between cremation and interment, especially if their loved one never made his or her preference clear. If this is the case, the compassionate and experienced funeral professionals of Sagel Bloomfield Funeral Home & Cremation Service would be honored to assist them in making this vital decision by providing needed information, guidance and support. For people who know that they want to be cremated after they pass, the funeral directors encourage them to write a funeral pre plan now and give a copy of it to someone they trust. If they do not officially indicate this desire, their cremation is dependent on the signed approval of their spouse. If they have no living husband or wife, all of their offspring must agree to the cremation process. If they have no children, their next of kin has the final say.
A direct cremation is the most cost effective type of cremation. In a direct cremation, the body is cremated directly after death after the family signs a cremation authorization form. A family typically must wait twenty-four hours for the cremation to be performed. No traditional funeral and pre-funeral events like a wake are arranged, because of this, families typically do not need to engage the service of a funeral home. They do not need to purchase a casket, because bodies are cremated in simple containers, and they do not need to spend money on embalming. Finally, they do not need to purchase a burial site. In many cities, a direct cremation can be performed for under one thousand dollars, and prices do vary. After the cremation families can hold a memorial service. In most cases, the staff of the crematory will handle all the aspects associated with a cremation. The funeral home will complete the death certificate and transport the body to the crematory. Even if families opt to hold a funeral service and engage a funeral home prior to cremation, in many cases, funeral homes offer rental caskets for the service. Bereaved families can save thousands of dollars by choosing cremation.
Those who choose cremation for a loved one or for themselves may receive the healing benefits of a traditional funeral service. A viewing or closed casket visitation can be planned to occur prior to the funeral. The only difference between traditional services before cremation and those before burial is that a rental or cremation casket it used. The funeral directors of Sagel Bloomfield Funeral Home & Cremation Service have a fine selection of such caskets available and it would be their privilege to help a family select one that is appropriate in appearance and cost.
In addition, there is the option of hosting a memorial gathering in honor of the departed taking place at some time after the cremation has been conducted. It is common for such events to be scheduled on the one-year anniversary of the person’s death. A memorial service can be held in any location, giving families the flexibility to choose a setting that was special to the deceased
Sagel Bloomfield Funeral Home & Cremation wants to remind the residents of Chevy Chase Maryland that cremation only refers to the manner in which families have chosen to deal with the physical remains of their loved ones. We want you to know that this decision doesn’t limit the ways you can honor your loved one’s life. Sagel Bloomfield Funeral Home & Cremation heartily suggest that a funeral or memorial service be performed for the deceased. Again, the options are limited only by families’ imagination. 5 dead in 3 weeks: are Indonesia’s whale strandings on the rise?
A cluster of whale and whale shark strandings across Indonesia – five in the past three weeks alone – has raised questions over whether such incidents are becoming more frequent, with experts pointing to a mix of environmental shifts, human activity and improved reporting as possible explanations. On September 25, a whale shark became stranded and died on a beach in Aceh province, just days after a decomposed whale carcass was discovered in a mangrove in Riau province. Another whale was found...

For months, the air over West Kalimantan has been thick enough to taste. Now, some of the province’s residents are taking the government to court over it. Indonesia’s worst wildfire season in 11 years has been sending plumes of toxic haze drifting across borders to Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines since at least August. But nowhere has been worse hit than West Kalimantan, where more than 48,000 hectares (185 square miles) of land and forest have burned since the start of the year,...

Baby bonuses fail to address the fear of falling behind
When one of my seniors from medical school was pregnant during her surgical residency, she planned the exact date of her C-section so she could complete her training on time. When I asked why she didn’t consider taking maternity leave to recuperate afterwards, she said she couldn’t bring herself to lag behind her peers. “I didn’t want motherhood to slow me down,” she said. In medicine, it is common for women to delay childbearing until after their early career years, often into their...
