Diet and Mental Health are linked in 30+ New Publications by Eat2beNICE project.

16 European research institutes announce 30+ papers on connections among diet, lifestyle, and mental health. Its 2020 Eat2beNICE General Assembly promises completion of four clinical trials by 2022.

Now completing its third year, the Eat2beNICE Consortium of 16 European research institutes has published over thirty research papers on the connections between nutrition, lifestyle, and mental health.
Eat2beNICE is funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program for five years from 2018 through 2022. Dissemination of information is accomplished through the project’s website https://newbrainnutrition.com.
The Team of over 100 physicians, psychiatrists, nutritionists, epidemiologists, and other research scientists is studying the gut-brain connection and how what we eat and our exercise, or lack thereof, affect mental health. Four clinical trials are under way which will produce more research findings and recommendations for the public, health professionals, and public policy to improve population health.
The clinical trials already underway are 1) the elimination diet (how eliminating different foods from the diet can effect children with ADHD, (the TRACE study); 2) the effects of the Mediterranean diet on elderly (the Predimed Plus study); 3) how broad spectrum supplementation effects both the gut and the brain (the Vantastic study); and 4) how probiotics combined in different formulations can effect adults with ADHD or Borderline Personality Disorder (the Probia Study). Each of the studies is a random controlled trial (RCT) in which a cohort of study subjects receives the targeted treatment, and a second cohort receives a placebo or control diet. To reduce scientific bias, the Vantastic and Probia studies also make use of a double-blinded design, where neither the subjects nor the researchers know who gets the treatment or the placebo. Results between the two groups are compared to see if there are significantly different results. While these studies are underway, members of Eat2beNICE are publishing papers which document the underlying science on which the clinical trials are based. These papers, and the trials, were reviewed in the November annual General Assembly, held virtually in 2020. Previous Assemblies were held in different cities around Europe.
The publications include research studies on both human and mouse subjects. The use of mice in studies offers direction for further study in humans.
The published papers include such topics as:
· Coffee consumption and cognitive functioning
· Diet and fitness effects on young obese individuals
· Inflammation and liver pathology associated with a Western diet
· The association among stress, diet quality and common mental health problems
· Early life stress and its effect on brain and pattern development
· Control of sugar (glycemic) intake and effect on diabetes and executive function in the brain
