DENVER, CO - March 4, 2017 /MarketersMedia/ —
Nationwide efforts to eliminate homelessness across various communities in the United States have a longstanding history, yet this overly distressing form of a social crisis remains an alarming issue for many policymakers, humanitarian organizations, and individual philanthropists alike. A recent report by the National Alliance to End Homelessness concluded that on a single night in January 2015, 564,708 people had to sleep outside, in the streets, or were placed in shelters and transitional housing programs. Baltimore is no exception to the nationwide homelessness, with an estimated 3,000 people homeless on the streets of the city, many of whom are families with children. Feeling particularly passionate about the cause, acclaimed inspirational speaker and hospitality leader, Des Hague has made it his mission to support charities in a variety of cities across the country, and in Baltimore these efforts focus on reintegrating the homeless with society.
Hague is credited with founding a program known as the “Centerplate Promise,” during his tenure as CEO and President of Centerplate, the fastest-growing hospitality group in North America. He established the program to support communities in which his employees work and live. Within the larger umbrella, individual programs were designed and tailored according to the specific needs of the community in question. As a result, Hague and Centerplate Promise became principal sponsors of the Journey Home initiative in Baltimore.
Under the leadership of Des Hague, Centerplate staged numerous remarkable fundraising events in Baltimore, for example “an Evening of Unexpected Delights,” a gala held at the city's Convention Center that raised almost $500,000 for the Journey Home. The glamorous event was only a small part of Hague’s contribution to Baltimore’s 10-year plan to eliminate homelessness in the city: “Centerplate works to enhance the communities in which we live and work. We’re extremely pleased to have helped raise over $1.3 million for the Journey Home Campaign over the past three years,” observed Hague following the gala. A number of individual projects were funded as part of the overall goal of helping the homeless, including an employment program and a children’s coordination plan to support the social and academic needs of the almost 1,000 homeless youth accommodated in the city’s shelters.
Countless other charities around the country are regularly supported as part of the Centerplate Promise program. Especially mention-worthy examples are Denver, where a number of scholarships have been awarded for the underprivileged, as well as Seattle, New Orleans, and San Francisco, where valuable funding has been provided to help at risk youth through support of the Juma Ventures program. In addition, larger not-for-profit organizations such as the St Jude’s Children’s Hospital and United Way have benefited from the philosophical initiatives and the direction of Hague.
Des Hague served as President and CEO at Centerplate Inc. between 2009 and 2014, during which time the company grew to become the largest hospitality business in North America, operating with more than 40,000 staff. Hague is renowned for focusing on delivering value for the client and restructured the company to deliver strongly along these lines, even in the face of the global recession. He has extraordinary knowledge within the food industry and has served on the board of the National Restaurant Association. Before joining Centerplate he gained experience as President of IHOP, the world’s biggest casual dining restaurant chain. Hague is widely known as a leading force in the global retail food industry and a recognized philanthropist.

The government is exploring nuclear power options to guard against global energy shocks. One proposal is to switch on a plant in Bataan that has been mothballed for 40 years.
The prospect of United States, Chinese and Russian leaders meeting at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in Shenzhen this November has revived the Yalta analogy. Talk of a Trump-Xi-Putin summit – echoing the 1945 meeting that reshaped the world – surfaced during the first Trump term, and speculation returned last year with the 80th anniversary of the second world war. No such meeting occurred. However, Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted the two presidents back-to-back in...
Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak said on Sunday that he would remain in Kajang Prison as he and his legal team study the conditions attached to his “conditional pardon”, including the payment of a 50 million ringgit (US$12.3 million) fine before he can be transferred to house arrest. In a statement issued on his behalf by Messrs Shafee & Co, Najib said his transfer to house arrest depended on the conditions of the pardon being fulfilled. “Until the fine is paid to the court, our...

As heatwaves become more frequent and intense across Asia, the region faces a dangerous power paradox. Soaring demand for air conditioning threatens to push electricity grids closer to failure just as extreme heat puts the infrastructure under greater strain, raising the risk of cooling disappearing when people need it most. That risk has been visible across the region this summer. In South Korea, President Lee Jae Myung called a record heatwave a “national disaster” in August after the death...
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim caused a bit of a stir in India recently with his spirited rendition of a Bollywood classic – a lighthearted moment that also neatly captured his broader push to deepen ties with the South Asian giant. A video of Anwar singing, from memory, Kishore Kumar’s 1965 hit ballad “Khwab Ho Tum Ya Koi Haqeeqat” (“Are you a dream or are you reality?”) was first posted to his social media accounts last Sunday before quickly being picked up by Indian news outlets. The...
When Jordan Seow joined OpenAI in June 2025, he became the company’s first locally hired forward-deployed engineer in Asia-Pacific, joining a Singapore office that then had fewer than 20 employees. The 29-year-old is now part of a fast-growing workforce built in Singapore by the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies. Experts say the city state is emerging as a regional hub – not for training the latest AI models, but for the increasingly crucial task of deploying and adapting them...
A former Australian official’s use of a hypothetical “aggressive Indonesia” to make the case for Aukus at a public inquiry has been called “clumsy diplomacy” by analysts, who say the comments risk reviving old suspicions as Jakarta and Canberra try to strengthen security ties. Michael Pezzullo, a former deputy secretary of strategy in Australia’s defence department, made the remarks in testimony on September 2 to the Aukus Public Inquiry, an independent, crowdfunded review of the trilateral...

Chinese action camera maker Insta360 is deepening its US footprint with a flagship store opening in New York as it navigates escalating price competition with DJI and industry-wide memory cost pressures. The Chinese GoPro rival was slated to plant its flag in the heart of Times Square with its first flagship retail store in the US on Saturday, a marquee launch as the firm looked to “leap to the next stage of growth”, co-founder Max Richter said. “The US market plays a very important role for us...
