Copenhagen Atomics and Urenco Collaborate to Develop Uranium Deconversion Facility in Denmark

Nov 4, 2026

This collaboration aims to establish UF₄ production capabilities in Europe, addressing a critical supply-chain challenge for the global molten salt reactor industry.

Copenhagen, Denmark, November 4, 2026 -- Copenhagen Atomics, a pioneer in thorium-fueled molten salt reactor technology, and Urenco, a global leader in the supply of uranium enrichment services are collaborating to build a deconversion facility in Copenhagen. The reactor company has also purchased low-enriched uranium (LEU) for its first reactors from Urenco. The current global supply chain is only able to deliver LEU as uranium hexafluoride (UF6), but molten salt reactors require uranium tetrafluoride (UF4).

Therefore, Copenhagen Atomics and Urenco, have signed an MoU to collaborate on the design of a UF6-to-UF4 deconversion facility at Copenhagen Atomics' fuel facility. The UF6 deconversion line is an important part of Copenhagen Atomics ton-scale fuel-salt production facility, the first one in the world.

Copenhagen Atomics has invented a new type of nuclear reactor which has exceptionally better performance than other nuclear reactors. Designed to operate at a lower cost than conventional energy sources, and using significantly less natural resources than other nuclear reactors. These thorium fueled molten salt reactors need UF4 as part of their kick starter fuel. Other molten salt reactors also need UF4 as their base-fuel.

To seed the market and build momentum, Copenhagen Atomics is collaborating with Urenco, an international leader in uranium enrichment. Building on Urenco's extensive UF6 know-how, Copenhagen Atomics will deploy its engineering capabilities to construct and operate a dedicated UF6-to-UF4 deconversion facility in Copenhagen.

Under the agreement, Copenhagen Atomics will source enriched UF6,, convert it into UF4, and synthesize high-purity fuel salts for its own reactors, as well as supply salts to external commercial Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) developers and research institutions.

This combined double milestone, securing key fuel supply and establishing European deconversion capabilities, marks a critical advancement in Copenhagen Atomics' reactor development timeline and supply chain strategy.

“We are very proud that Urenco chose to work with us on this project," said Aslak Stubsgaard, CTO of Copenhagen Atomics. “Establishing this UF4 production line in Copenhagen provides the final missing piece in our supply chain puzzle, enabling full in-house production of reactor-ready fuel salts and supporting the wider advanced nuclear sector.”

“This agreement brings together our respective capabilities to develop a novel fuel solution and establish the supply chain required to support its future deployment." said Dr Iain Roche, Business Development Director at Urenco. "It is exactly the kind of long-term collaboration needed to turn advanced reactor technologies into commercial reality"

About Copenhagen Atomics

At Copenhagen Atomics, we believe civilization advances when energy becomes abundant. Throughout history, every major leap in human progress has been powered by access to more reliable energy - not less.

Since 2014, we’ve been pioneering the development of the world’s lowest-cost energy solution. Our reactor is mass-manufactured to roughly the size of a shipping container, meaning it can be deployed anywhere at scale. We believe this technology can effectively fulfill the massive energy needs mankind will face in the 21st century.

Indonesia says Asean diplomacy ‘must not stop’ despite Singapore row

A senior Indonesian diplomat said on Wednesday that dialogue “must not stop” among Asean members, amid a diplomatic row between Jakarta and Singapore over transboundary haze. Ties between the Southeast Asian neighbours have been tense after wildfires in Indonesia blanketed the city state in toxic smog for months. Complaints from Singapore over the air quality were met with sharp rebukes from Indonesian officials. Despite a visit to Jakarta by Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian...

Lawyer dismisses rumours of Malaysia’s Najib settling US$12.3 million fine

Lawyers for Malaysia’s jailed former prime minister Najib Razak on Wednesday dismissed speculation about his imminent transfer to house arrest, as his former ruling party struggles to raise the 50 million ringgit (US$12.3 million) fine needed to bring him home. The rumours came as Najib’s United Malays National Organisation (Umno) seeks to build on recent electoral victories, with analysts saying his return to house arrest could give the party a boost among supporters ahead of the next general...

Jakarta wants Russia not to recruit Indonesians in its war. Should Prabowo call Putin?

Indonesia has called on Russia to stop recruiting its citizens to fight in Ukraine, with analysts saying the appeal may only be ineffective if President Prabowo Subianto directly pressures his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the issue. On Sunday, Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Yvonne Mewengkang said: “The Indonesian government asked the Russian government to take all necessary steps to ensure that no Indonesians will be recruited into the Russian military or any other...

An Indonesian military helicopter carrying eight people on a firefighting mission crashed in waters off Borneo island on Wednesday, killing a crew member, the army said. The Southeast Asian archipelago has for months been struggling to control wildfires that have burned through large swathes of Sumatra, Borneo and Papua islands, causing choking haze that drifted to neighbouring Malaysia, East Timor and Singapore. The helicopter took off on Wednesday morning from Seruyan district in Borneo’s...

Australian PM Albanese takes swipe at ex-UK leader Liz Truss over backpacker visa rules

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Wednesday took aim at former UK leader Liz Truss and the thousands of British backpackers flocking to cities like Sydney, as the government seeks to tweak visa rules and ease pressure on the local job market. Truss, who lasted just 49 days in office before being forced to resign in 2022, called the travel arrangement “a major achievement of our trade deal with Australia and hard fought!” “Young Brits no longer have to do farm work as part of their...

Wingtech rejects Nexperia restructuring, cites ‘discrimination’ towards Chinese investors

Shanghai-listed Wingtech Technology has rejected a restructuring proposal under which it would lose control of Dutch chipmaker Nexperia’s assets outside China, condemning the plan as an “expropriation” driven by discrimination. The stand-off deepens a year-long dispute between Wingtech and Dutch authorities, as the company faces an impending delisting deadline at home, while Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten prepares for an official visit to Beijing in the spring. In a statement on Tuesday,...

As US-Iran war shows, China’s influence can’t secure its line to Gulf oil

China is becoming increasingly important to the Gulf’s economic future. Yet the Gulf remains capable of disrupting China’s own. That is the contradiction exposed by the US-Iran war. Beijing’s importance as an energy customer, investor and technology partner has grown, but its ability to guarantee the maritime routes connecting the Middle East to East Asia remains limited. The next contest in global energy will concern not only who produces and consumes it, but who can preserve access when...
