Clear and Present Public Health Emergency

University College London Research Warning

Surprise, Arizona Oct 21, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - A warning from University College London researchers that prolonged exposure to conventional LED lighting could have important biological consequences is drawing attention to a technology developed by Science of Light (SOL).

In a 25 September 2026 report, The European interviewed UCL Professor Glen Jeffery and Dr. Bob Fosbury about concerns that modern LED lighting provides substantial short-wavelength light while containing little or no near-infrared (NIR). Professor Jeffery described the potential implications as a "clear and present public health emergency" and compared the concern with asbestos.

The researchers are investigating whether the lack of longer wavelengths in conventional LED environments may affect mitochondrial function and contribute to metabolic problems. The European reports that their research includes investigating approximately 850-nanometer near-infrared light as a potential way to address the issue.

SOL says it has already patented an LED lighting technology incorporating 850-nm NIR.
U.S. Patent No. 12,337,188 B2, Method and Apparatus for Improving Eye Health with Near Infrared and Visible Light, was issued to Kenneth Ceder and Leonard Ceder in June 2025. The patent specifically describes an LED light source incorporating a NIR LED peaked at 850 nanometers, together with visible-spectrum LEDs.

"It's remarkable to see researchers now investigating 850-nanometer NIR supplementation in LED environments when our patent already specifically covers an LED lighting architecture incorporating 850-nanometer near-infrared light," said Ken Ceder, Executive Director of Science of Light.

INCANDESCENT-LIKE LIGHT WITH LED EFFICIENCY

SOLshine Photo Nutrition was developed around a simple premise: sunlight contains far more than the wavelengths needed simply to see.

Unlike conventional white LEDs that can have a relatively limited spectrum, SOLshine combines a "full-spectrum" of visible light with red and near-infrared wavelengths. The result is designed to provide the broader, more natural spectral character associated with incandescent light while retaining the energy efficiency and long life of modern LED technology.

"Our message is simple: Sunshine outdoors. SOLshine indoors." said Ceder. "People should get natural daylight whenever possible and especially morning sunlight to synchronize their circadian rhythm with each new day. But when they are indoors, we believe there is an opportunity to make artificial light more biologically considered.".SOL calls this approach Photo Nutrition--the concept that light has biological value beyond vision--and Light Hygiene, daily lighting practices that help people live closer to the natural light environment.

A CALL FOR SIMPLE EDUCATION."We have changed the spectrum of the light surrounding human beings on an unprecedented scale," Ceder said. "We need to understand what that means.".

Malaysian teen arrested after live-streaming axe attack on teacher in class

Malaysian police have arrested a 16-year-old student after he live-streamed an attack on a teacher with an axe at a private school in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak state. CCTV footage shows the teenager entering a classroom at around 7.50am on Wednesday, hitting the female teacher once with an axe before leaving. He re-enters through a second door and swings the axe at a student as others flee the room. As the teacher tries to intervene, he attempts to hack at her again but is subdued by two...

South Korean publishers raise alarm over bulk book buys linked to AI training

South Korean publishers are calling for stronger copyright protections and compensation as bulk book purchase requests suspected of being linked to artificial intelligence training raise concerns over intellectual property theft. Publishing groups are investigating suspicious orders and seeking a coordinated response. However, authors and publishers face a fundamental obstacle: they often cannot know for sure whether their books are being used to train AI systems. Kyobo Book Centre, a bookstore...

Asean wants a single digital economy. Will different state laws hobble its goal?

Southeast Asian nations are seeking to make it easier for businesses and consumers to operate across borders in the digital economy, but achieving the goal will depend on whether governments can align their domestic laws under a proposed pact, according to analysts. Targeted to be signed during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Manila in November, the Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) is aimed at improving compatibility between rules and systems governing...

Prabowo warns regional critics Indonesia won’t be ‘insulted’ over haze

Indonesia’s president railed against “countries that like to insult” his nation over wildfires that have razed vast areas, spewing toxic haze into neighbouring countries. The Southeast Asian giant has for months struggled to contain fires that Nusantara Atlas, an independent monitor analysing satellite data, said had consumed more than 1.9 million hectares (4.7 million acres) in the nine months to September. The haze has sent air pollution levels surging to dangerous levels not only at home, but...

China’s Unitree unveils ‘guardian’ robot that can disarm attackers, lift cars

A knife-wielding intruder is confronted. A car is lifted to free a trapped victim. A pedestrian is pulled from the path of an oncoming vehicle. The scenes described are not from a Hollywood blockbuster, but a promotional clip for a new “guardian” robot created by the Chinese technology firm Unitree Robotics. The footage for the H2-X model, released on Wednesday, underscores a wider shift in strategy by the Hangzhou-based firm, as it focuses on finding practical, real-world uses for its athletic...

Takaichi remains popular with Japanese public. Can she maintain her grip on LDP?

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has marked one year in office still riding relatively high in public opinion polls – a heady position that few political analysts anticipated despite geopolitical tensions and persistent inflation. A poll by the conservative-leaning Yomiuri newspaper published on Monday indicated that Takaichi’s cabinet retains the support of 57 per cent of the Japanese public, down two percentage points from the previous survey on September 18 and significantly lower than...

Websites pulled offline worldwide as AI finds critical security flaws

Government agencies and companies around the world shut down websites Wednesday after two critical flaws came to light involving PHP, a programming language that is the basis for a large share of the internet. PHP sits underneath popular web design platforms, so the weaknesses potentially affect a vast range of websites, from online stores and news outlets to government services. Wiz, one of the security firms that found the flaws, estimated that PHP runs about 70 per cent of the world’s...

Pakistan and the US factor as China looks to sell its J-35 stealth jets

Last month, the US published the fine print of a US$686 million upgrade deal for Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jets. The deal is for data link systems, new encryption gear and a refit that keeps the jets flying until 2040. The notice says Pakistan can protect the technology to “substantially the same degree” as the US government. The Pakistan Air Force is also the only declared interested buyer of China’s J-35 stealth fighter, a generational leap in technology. The Chinese jet first flew at the Zhuhai...

Meta Platforms was ordered to pay a groundbreaking US$25 billion civil penalty to the state of New Mexico in a consumer deception case spurred by the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The fine issued by state court Judge Francis Mathew is among the largest verdicts issued in US legal history. The award comes after a jury in Santa Fe determined that Meta had violated the state’s consumer protection over 43 million times based on widely viewed deceptive statements made by the company and its top...
