Discover the Secrets to Hire a Mechanic Successfully from Automotive Recruitment Industry Expert Chris Lawson
Chris Lawson, founder of Technician Find, recently made a groundbreaking appearance on the "Gain Traction" podcast, hosted by Mike Edge. The episode dives deep into the challenges involved when attempting to attract and hire a mechanic. The podcast showcases the successful strategies Lawson his team now employ for attracting the best talent faster.
Lawson, a digital marketing strategist who founded Astute Social Media in 2012, shares the story about how a chance presentation for 10 automotive repair shop owners in late 2017 changed the trajectory of his digital marketing business.
During the episode, Lawson shared the event that got him on the track of finding staff for automotive repair businesses: "Fast-forward to 2017, I was asked to do a presentation for a room full of auto repair shop owners on social media. Within the next six months, I had nine of the 10 shop owners as clients. What I learned from this experience was that shops really needed help finding technicians."
Technician Find, launched in 2017 after that fateful presentation, primarily assists independent repair shops in using creative ads, powerful social media marketing strategies and direct outreach to find top technicians faster.
The conversation on "Gain Traction" shed light on various aspects:
The essential skill sets for recruiting automotive technicians.
Why the recruitment process is akin to fishing, not hunting. And why this mindset shift will help independent automotive repair shops get better results.
Challenges faced in developing workflows that generate a consistent flow of qualified applicants for Technician Find's clients.
The shortcomings of generic job postings on platforms like Indeed.
Lawson went on to share, "When we run a campaign, professional copywriting, social media marketing, and direct outreach are crucial. The A-players that you really want to reach are almost always currently employed so your message is usually perceived as an interruption. There's a fine line between grabbing attention and being perceived as spam. It's all in the details."
Mike Edge further emphasized the unique value Lawson brings to the table, stating, "Having the right partners, like Technician Find, is a significant asset. Shop owners have their plates full managing customer relations and ensuring quality service. The assistance in recruitment makes a difference."
With a suite of skills ranging from direct response copywriting to lead generation and social media ad campaigns, Technician Find has revolutionized how repair shops approach technician recruitment. Lawson’s innovative strategies, as highlighted in this episode, are a beacon for repair shops struggling to find the right talent in an ever-competitive market.

SI is the future of AI – just not in the way Trump thinks
With US President Donald Trump recently pushing the use of “superintelligence” (SI) instead of artificial intelligence (AI) in national discourse, the acronym has gained unprecedented attention. It is the right acronym but the wrong meaning. In my opinion, SI should stand for “self-intelligence”. It probably explains why academics, critics and even major AI companies are calling for a temporary pause in AI development. They must have realised the technology’s current trajectory is headed down...
