The announcement comes as the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry states that about 20% of 5-year-olds wet the bed, and 53% of US adults have some sort of urinary incontinence, according to the American Urological Association Journals. The new educational campaign stresses the importance of waterproof mattress protection, which is the first line of defense against bedwetting or incontinence. Phyllis explains that a dry mattress is a clean mattress, as any form of fluid will cause mold and bacterial growth which increases the risk of infection.
This is especially true for adult incontinence, which may need a more robust solution. Unlike bedwetting, which typically occurs when a child is asleep, adult incontinence can happen at any time during the day. This is because of the many factors that contribute to the condition, including urinary tract infection (UTI), pelvic floor disorders, an enlarged prostate, prescription drug side effects, and post-surgical complications among other things.
Finding the right waterproof mattress protector for bedwetting or adult incontinence depends on several factors. The most important one is selecting the right material for one’s skin type and budget. The most common materials are vinyl and polyurethane membranes. While vinyl is more economical, it is also less breathable, which may cause some people to overheat at night or cause a skin rash if not changed regularly. Conversely, polyurethane is hypoallergenic and a more breathable option. People tend to stay cool and sleep more soundly, leading to a better night's sleep.
