Australian Battery Technology Recycling Company To Advance Commercial Studies In The Recycling Of Utility Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems

Oct 22, 2022

Australian battery recycling technology company Battery Pollution today announced a strategic alliance to work with associated Renewable Project Developer Halo Renewable Energy (“Halo”) to investigate the efficient recycling of utility scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) which are the cornerstone of the modern renewable energy project.

Australia is on a path of strong growth in the implementation of grid supporting “Big Battery” BESS projects, with new investment in projects recently announced by both New South Wales and Queensland Governments.  These include the 700 MW NSW “Waratah Super Battery” to be built at the site of the Eraring power station.

But batteries are a consumable product and given their chemical and electrical engineering foundations are subject to abnormal events, including failure.  The frequency of these problems is tracked on the Energy Power Research Institute’s dedicated “BESS Failure Event Database” linked here.

Under the arrangement Battery Pollution will lead scientific and operational investigation into a variety of areas which compliments the requirement of Halo as a renewable project developer to ensure the safe and efficient construction, management, and maintenance of BESS systems on its Renewables projects can be achieved.  Areas for investigation include:

  • the efficient & safe transport of both damaged and used utility scale batteries from remote Renewable Energy project locations to recycling centres – including implementing live monitoring (similar to Battery Passport technology);
  • de-energisation & disassembly optimisation – including through a combined approach of human and robotic co-ordinated activity;
  • the potential for residual energy scavenging from demobilized BESS to either fixed capacitor or battery banks in order to provide day to day operational energy contribution at Battery Pollution’s operational recycling sites;
  • optimal approaches to shredding of cell packs; and
  • recovery, separation, treatment and refinement of “black mass” to produce battery grade materials that are of such purity that they can be immediately sold back to battery manufacturers to ensure a closed loop battery economy.

“Battery Pollution’s research, investment and operational activities continue to focus on both the optimisation of existing technology, and the creation of new of technology for the lithium battery ecosystem” Nicholas Assef, Founder & CEO of Battery Pollution noted.

“The future will not only be about being able to deal with the vast volume of battery waste that is going to be produced from industries such as Renewables and Electric Vehicles, but to recycle in the most effective and efficient way possible to minimize CO2 impact, and to maximise the availability of 2nd life critical battery metals for the manufacturing OEMs” Nicholas Assef continued.

Australia is a logical “test bed” for the development of exportable technology and operational approaches to large scale lithium battery recycling given the take up in large scale BESS projects, and the ambition of both Federal and State Governments to transition to an Electric” economy.

Battery Pollution continues to work with a number of leading Australian Universities in the development of commercial solutions for the challenges that will result from large scale battery waste produced by electric vehicles and renewable energy projects as examples. As the Company’s tagline highlights its mission is to be: “Dealing with the dark side of the battery revolution.

Why Singapore’s PAP internal vote is the wrong place to look for signs of leadership renewal

Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) has retained its core executive team in what is seen as a cautious approach despite pledges of renewal, with observers pointing to ministerial promotions as a better indication of leadership plans. The PAP emerged from an internal election on Sunday with an unchanged slate for the Central Executive Committee (CEC), its highest decision-making body, as rising ministers Jeffrey Siow and Jasmin Lau failed to secure seats, though four remaining co-opted...

Singapore, Indonesia to create haze task force, share data amid tensions

Indonesia and Singapore are looking to set up a joint task force to deal with haze from Indonesia’s wildfires, the countries’ foreign ministers said on Tuesday, as they met to reaffirm their ties after weeks of simmering tensions. The visit to Jakarta by Singapore Foreign Minister ‌Vivian Balakrishnan came amid mounting frustrations in the city state over the transboundary haze generated by Indonesia’s most intense forest fires in 11 years. Philippines’ bounty on ‘Bato’ dela Rosa exposes Marcos’ dilemma in Duterte feud

A 50-million-peso (US$780,000) bounty for information leading to the arrest of fugitive Philippine senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa has raised questions over the Marcos administration’s ability to enforce the law against high-profile political figures, with analysts warning the move risks making Manila appear weak and reactive. Dela Rosa, who served as national police chief under former president Rodrigo Duterte, faces an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for alleged crimes...
