ContrastConnect releases a guide to the 2026 CMS virtual direct supervision rules for contrast-enhanced imaging, detailing physician coverage, audiovisual requirements, documentation standards, and key compliance considerations for outpatient imaging centers.

Las Vegas, United States, October 23, 2026 /PressCable/ -- ContrastConnect has published a new guide explaining how CMS’s permanent 2026 virtual direct supervision rule applies to outpatient imaging facilities that perform contrast-enhanced studies. The resource outlines the updated supervision standard, which services qualify, and the audiovisual requirements facilities must meet.

Effective January 1, 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) permanently revised its definition of direct supervision under the Calendar Year 2026 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. The updated rule allows qualified physicians or other supervising practitioners to meet direct supervision requirements through real-time, two-way audiovisual technology for eligible services. Audio-only communication does not qualify.
Under the pre-2026 framework, direct supervision generally required the supervising physician or practitioner to be physically present in the office suite and immediately available to intervene. According to ContrastConnect, this requirement could create scheduling challenges for smaller and rural practices facing limited physician availability and rotating coverage.
The revised framework lets eligible imaging facilities—including those in rural and underserved areas—use virtual direct supervision where CMS rules allow it. However, services associated with 010 or 090 global surgery periods remain excluded, and not every contrast-enhanced imaging procedure automatically qualifies.
For facilities using remote supervision, ContrastConnect recommends documenting the supervising practitioner’s identity, their real-time availability during the service, the audiovisual technology used, and the steps to follow if the connection fails. Keeping these records can help facilities show compliance during audits or reviews.
Connection reliability is also essential to maintaining the required supervision. If an audiovisual link is lost and cannot be restored, the supervision requirement is no longer met. ContrastConnect’s guide recommends planning for interruptions and establishing procedures to address lost connections while protecting patients receiving contrast.
“Permanent virtual direct supervision gives imaging centers more flexibility, but success depends on dependable audiovisual technology and thorough documentation,” said a ContrastConnect spokesperson. “Facilities also need clear emergency protocols to meet CMS requirements and keep patients safe.”
Imaging facilities reviewing their coverage options can work with ContrastConnect, which connects outpatient facilities with qualified radiologists for virtual contrast supervision. The radiologist-led company reports supervising more than 75,000 contrast exam hours and managing over 130 reactions each month. ContrastConnect says its platform aligns with CMS, American College of Radiology (ACR), and HIPAA requirements.

With US President Donald Trump recently pushing the use of “superintelligence” (SI) instead of artificial intelligence (AI) in national discourse, the acronym has gained unprecedented attention. It is the right acronym but the wrong meaning. In my opinion, SI should stand for “self-intelligence”. It probably explains why academics, critics and even major AI companies are calling for a temporary pause in AI development. They must have realised the technology’s current trajectory is headed down...
Nearly 200 nations have struck hard-fought agreements at a UN biodiversity summit, but the outcome was accompanied by disappointment over missed opportunities to address humanity’s destructive toll on nature. Delegates cheered on Friday as crucial texts were approved in overtime but the celebrations were tempered by acrimonious debates and regret over limited progress on some of the most contentious issues. The Cop17 summit in Armenia sought to revive a landmark commitment to halt and reverse...

In the Land of the Rising Sun, Bangladesh looks forward to a new dawn. The hope that comes with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to Japan goes beyond the deals signed or the financial support expected. It shows a country that has emerged from authoritarian rule and wants to turn its new political voice into bigger economic chances and freedom of choice. For a government chosen by the people, foreign policy must answer one question: how does it make life better for the people who gave it...
Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) has doubled down on new businesses including battery swapping and energy storage as the world’s largest battery maker seeks new growth drivers amid intensifying price wars and mounting pressure on profitability. But the new path is far from straightforward. Established players like Nio have already built a strong presence in battery swapping, while BYD has reinforced its position in energy-storage systems.
