Rock Solid Septic & Excavation has published a South Carolina homeowner guide explaining septic repair areas, building setbacks, and the records to check before planning a garage, pool, driveway, or other yard improvement.
Spartanburg, United States, October 27, 2026 -- The licensed Spartanburg septic contractor's new guide explains a state rule that can derail plans for a garage or a pool on ground that looks like ordinary lawn.
SPARTANBURG, S.C., Oct. 7, 2026 — Rock Solid Septic & Excavation has published a homeowner guide titled "Can You Build Over a Septic Drain Field or Repair Area in South Carolina?" on its website. The guide covers a requirement many owners learn about only after they have drawn up building plans: part of the yard has to stay open for a future replacement septic system.

State Regulation 61-56 requires new septic sites to hold suitable land in reserve. Under Section 200.7, that repair area must equal at least 50% of the size of the original system, so a system with an 800-square-foot infiltration area needs at least 400 square feet in reserve. The ground must have suitable soil and stay free of buildings and impervious surfaces. The strips of undisturbed soil between existing drain trenches do not count toward it.
An active drainfield takes wastewater from the tank today. The repair area is land reserved for a future replacement system rather than part of the operating drainfield. It may look like an unused section of the yard, but it must remain suitable for future septic construction. Owners overlook it when they sketch a detached garage or a pool because on the surface it is only grass.
"A lot of people think the septic is just the tank and the drain lines, so the rest of the yard is free," said John (Ivan) Rusev, co-owner of Rock Solid Septic & Excavation. "Then they pour a slab for a shop right on the repair area. Five years later the drainfield quits, and now there's nowhere to put a new one."
The guide walks through which improvements conflict with a septic system and what to check before work begins. It covers the setbacks in Section 200.6, which keeps septic systems out from under driveways and parking areas. The same section sets a 5-foot setback from buildings and 15 feet from an inground pool.
A drainfield that fails after the reserve has been built over sends the owner back to a new site evaluation. Upstate clay narrows the choice of suitable ground, and property lines narrow it further. Some lots end up needing an engineered system, which Rusev says can cost three to four times as much as a conventional one.
The guide recommends checking septic permits and approved site plans before finalizing construction plans to identify the drainfield and any designated repair area. Rock Solid retrieves available records from SCDES at no charge, with county-specific guidance for Greenville, Spartanburg, Cherokee, Anderson, and Pickens. If records are unavailable, professional locating and marking costs $300 to $350 as of October 2026. The 50% repair-area requirement applies to new sites under the current regulation. Older properties may lack a designated area and require individual evaluation.

The number of Malaysians detained overseas for drug-related offences increased to 1,588 as of September this year, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni. Lukanisman said the five countries with the highest numbers of Malaysians detained were Indonesia (381), China (380), Singapore (310), Thailand (102) and Japan (72). He said increasingly sophisticated drug-smuggling methods had contributed to the frequent arrests of Malaysians overseas. “A total of 1,181 Malaysians were...

Judges took away the possibility of parole for an Australian woman, Erin Patterson, and rejected a bid to overturn her conviction over deadly beef Wellington lunch.
Australian mushroom murderer Erin Patterson lost a bid to overturn her convictions and had a harsher sentence imposed on Friday, failing to prove she was wrongfully jailed for killing three people with a poisoned lunch. Patterson was found guilty last year of murdering her husband’s parents and elderly aunt, deliberately lacing their beef Wellington meal with highly toxic death cap mushrooms. The 52-year-old maintained her triple murder convictions were a “miscarriage of justice”, urging the...
While many parents still question whether to give their children access to artificial intelligence, Malaysian tech worker Pravin Ganesan has embraced it to solve a very practical problem: helping his eight-year-old daughter with homework he sometimes struggles to explain. Pravin, 42, taught her a few basic prompts and checked the answers closely, finding that generative AI is particularly good at breaking down difficult concepts into child-friendly terms. “It has helped her learn and understand...

Thailand’s government said on Thursday it had revoked the citizenship of a prominent head rabbi who was a naturalised Thai, as the country tightens enforcement of its immigration laws. The order was signed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who is also interior minister. Thai law prohibits naturalised citizens from...
Singapore’s decision to send its top diplomat to Indonesia on a surprise visit, following days of terse exchanges over a regional haze, underscores a bid to defuse growing tensions and seek a direct channel to President Prabowo Subianto.
